Australia is Sri Lanka’s fourth-biggest source of visitors so far this October
New official figures show 77,868 tourists arrived in the first half of the month. India is far ahead, and Australia sits in fourth place.

Sri Lanka welcomed 77,868 international tourists between 1 and 15 October 2026, according to the latest weekly arrivals report from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
India was again by far the largest market, with 29,323 visitors, almost 38 per cent of the total. China (5,988) and the United Kingdom (5,291) came next. Australia was fourth with 4,187 arrivals, roughly one in every 19 visitors. Germany, Russia, France, Pakistan, the United States and the Maldives rounded out the top 10.
Since 1 January, 1,771,547 tourists have arrived in Sri Lanka. Australia is fifth for the year with 91,176 visitors, behind India, the UK, China and Germany.
What the numbers tell us
These points are The Dosage’s own calculations from the SLTDA figures:
- Sri Lanka averaged about 5,190 arrivals a day in the first half of October.
- If that pace held for the whole month, October would finish at around 161,000 visitors. That is a little below the 165,193 recorded in October 2025. SLTDA has not published a same-period comparison, so treat this as a rough guide only.
- The 2025 full-year total was 2,362,521. To match it, Sri Lanka needs about 591,000 more arrivals between 16 October and 31 December. That works out to about 7,675 a day, well above the current pace.
Why it matters to you
- If you have family in tourism: Hotels, guesthouses, drivers, guides and restaurants rely on these numbers. A steady flow from Australia is good news for businesses that host Australian travellers.
- If you are planning a trip home: The report counts arrivals only. It says nothing about fares or room rates, so compare prices early if you are travelling for the December and January holidays.
- If you follow Sri Lanka’s economy: Visitor numbers are one of the quickest monthly signals of how the recovery is tracking. Watch for SLTDA’s full October figures.
