A contract has been awarded to remove the level crossings at Anderson Street and Hudsons Road in Melbourne's west.

The Victorian Government announced on Thursday 22 October that an alliance of Acciona, WSP, Metro Trains Melbourne and VIDA Rail will deliver the project.

Why these crossings

The release describes Anderson Street as one of the most dangerous level crossings left on Melbourne's metropolitan rail network. It says there has been one fatality and four serious injuries there since 2006, and 26 near misses since 2016.

More than 6,000 pedestrians use the crossing each day, and the boom gates are down for half of the two-hour morning peak, according to the release.

At Hudsons Road, more than 6,600 vehicles use the crossing each day, with many waiting for long periods during the morning peak.

What's planned

Two new accessible underpasses will keep pedestrians and cyclists connected:

The project will also create new open space on Anderson Street for outdoor dining, seating and public artwork. After community feedback, it will include more car parking to improve access to the Yarraville Village precinct, the release says.

Four rounds of community engagement have been held, and early designs for Anderson Street were released in May.

Timeline

According to the release:

Minister for Public Transport Vicki Ward said removing the crossings "will improve safety and cut congestion".
