Lightning warnings: how to stay safe in a storm
The Met Department warned six provinces this week. Five simple rules from Sri Lanka Police.
On Monday 13 October the Department of Meteorology issued an advisory for strong lightning in six provinces: Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North Western and Southern. It warned of thundery showers, mostly in the evening and at night, with strong winds at times.
Five rules for a lightning storm
Sri Lanka Police publishes this advice for severe lightning:
- Get inside. Don’t stay outdoors or under trees. Shelter in a solid building or a closed vehicle.
- Leave open ground. Keep away from paddy fields, tea estates, playgrounds and reservoirs.
- Unplug. Don’t use corded phones or appliances that are plugged into the mains.
- Skip the open ride. Avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats until it passes.
- Watch for falling trees and wires. Strong winds can bring down trees and power lines.
Before you head out
Check the Department of Meteorology’s latest advisory, especially if you are travelling, working outdoors or have children walking home from school. In an emergency, contact your local disaster management office or the police.
