Nearly 2,000 more registered teachers joined Victorian schools in a year, snapshot shows
The 2025 Victorian Teacher Workforce Snapshot projects 15,700 more teachers in the system by 2031.
Nearly 2,000 more registered school teachers joined Victorian schools between 2024 and 2025, according to the 2025 Victorian Teacher Workforce Snapshot.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Gabrielle Williams announced the figures on Thursday 22 October.

According to the release:
- More than 127,000 school and early childhood teachers are estimated to be ready to teach in Victoria's schools and kindergartens by 2031.
- By 2031, Victoria is expected to have 15,700 more teachers in the system than in 2025.
- Fully registered early childhood teachers rose 12 per cent in a year.
- Victorian schools on average have fewer students per teacher than schools in all the other mainland states.
- Victoria accounted for more than 84 per cent of the national increase in government school enrolments between 2018 and 2025.
Support for new teachers
The release says the Career Start program has supported more than 6,100 early career teachers since it began in 2021, and will support a further 2,500 in 2027.
More than 6,000 early childhood teaching scholarships have been awarded since 2019. The first fully funded Secondary Teaching Scholarships recipients will graduate and enter the workforce at the end of 2027, the release says.
According to the release, paid placements, employment-based degrees and targeted incentives are being used to get more teachers into regional and hard-to-staff schools and subjects. The government also says class sizes will be protected in the new enterprise bargaining agreement.
