Planning has begun for two new employment precincts in Melbourne's west. The Victorian Government release names them as the Ravenhall and Warrawee precincts, while its opening line places them in Ravenhall and Truganina.

Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny announced the start of planning works on Thursday 22 October. The government says the precincts will bring more jobs closer to where thousands of homes are being built.

A new approach

According to the release, the two precincts will pilot an industry-led approach, with developers working with the government on parts of the planning process.

The proponents, Boral, Dexus and Pelligra, will fund the planning and infrastructure improvements needed to unlock the land in the long term. The release says this includes major upgrades to arterial roads in the area.

Have your say

There will be public consultation so the community can have a say on the new developments. The release does not give dates.

Nearby growth

The release says more than 72 hectares of land in the same precinct was recently rezoned for industrial use through the Development Facilitation Program, creating more than 1,000 jobs.

It also points to Melton East, a new suburb the government says will deliver 12,000 homes, seven schools and more than five MCGs' worth of parks and reserves. Once complete, Melton East is expected to be home to more than 36,000 residents and support around 1,600 jobs.
